HISTORICAL GOLD RATE PRICE AND TREND

During the past 20 years the price of gold increased importantly from the lows of 250 US$/ounce in July 1999 until over 1800 US$/ounce in the summer of 2011 during the Euro crisis. From that moment on and until the end of the year 2015 the gold rate retreated until almost 1000 US$ per ounce starting to grow again from the beginning of 2016 reaching 1370 USD/ounce in July 2016.

 

GOLD RATE PURITY – 8k, 10k, 12k, 14k, 18k, 20k, 22k, 24k

In order to classify the purity of gold one can use the carats or the parts of gold out of 1000. Carats use a 0 to 24 scale and the given number indicates how many parts of gold are present in the manufact out of 24 total units. 

Alternatively, another scale used particularly in certain parts of the world is the scale from 0 to 1000. The data are updated automatically daily based on the morning gold fixing in London.

Be aware that prices are indicative based on the gold fix in London and might not be the ones that sellers and buyers will offer you.

HOW TO CALCULATE THE VALUE OF A COIN

Let’s take for example the British Gold Sovereign: it weighs 7,9881 grams or 0,25682 ounces. However it is not made of 100% pure gold.

Its value can be easily found by checking the gold price today and knowing that the coin has 22 kt. Multiply the weight and the valuation of gold: (0.25682 ounces * 22 kt gold price) and you will find the value of Gold Sovereign in USD. To make things simpler it is enough to follow three simple steps to calculate the value of a gold manufact (ingot, coin, jewel, etc.)

1. Find the purity of the gold manufact in carats.
2. Find out the value of the gold today that can be read on the table above according to the gold purity of the manufact.
3. Multiply the obtained value for the weight of the object (in ounces).

 

On many jewels the carats or the parts in 1000 are engraved and it is therefore easy to know the gold purity of the manufact. In the same way ingots usually have the same characteristics visibly engraved on the ingot.

It can be more complicated to know the purity of gold coins; in case you don’t know the purity it is advised to gather the information on a catalogue (paper or online) remembering to paying attention to the year when the coin was minted.

LBMA GOLD PRICE AND LONDON GOLD FIXING

The once called London Gold Fixing and the substantially similar new LBMA (London Bullion Market Association) Gold price are a way of setting the gold price for settlements. Twice a day at 10.00 and 15.30 London time the participants (currently 13 banks) meet to decide the benchmark for gold. The new name of LBMA Gold price has been adopted in March 2015.

Once the auction among participants has been made, the benchmark is communicated in three currencies: USD, GBP and EUR.

Price participants to the LBMA Gold Price are 13 banks which are: Bank of China, Bank of Communications, China Construction Bank, Goldman Sachs International, HSBC Bank USA NA, ICBC Standard Bank, JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, Société Generale, Standard Chartered, The Bank of Nova Scotia, The Toronto Dominion Bank and UBS.
